Vice Principal Student Services - Glen Hutton

I was born and raised in Calgary and attended the University of Calgary. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 1975 and my Bachelor of Education degree in 1976. My wife and I moved to the Town of Vulcan in 1976 where I began my teaching career at County Central High School. I spent 21 years primarily teaching junior high and high school science. However, I also taught mathematics, language arts, social studies, health, and home economics at various times in my career. One of my proudest accomplishments was the development of a Marine Biology course for the students in Vulcan in 1986. Every year, a group of 16 high school students investigates the marine ecosystem. As well studying marine biology, the students in this program learn about the First Nation peoples that live in this area. The course ends in a six-day field trip to the Gulf Islands off the coast of British Columbia. Click here if you are interested in learning more about Marine Biology on the Prairies. I completed my Masters of Education degree at The University of Lethbridge in 2002.

In addition to teaching, I have authored fourteen science textbooks that are used in the Science 14 and Science 24 programs in Alberta. I have also authored one of the chapters for the new Science 10 book that will be published next winter. In addition to writing, I was a consultant in the development of a program called "Missing." This program is designed to inform families of the dangers associated with the Internet. In particular, "Missing" looks at how pedophiles are using Chat rooms to lure teenagers and younger children away from home. Click here if you are interested in learning more about the Missing program.

On a personal note, I am married with three sons. My wife, Vicki, is a consulting teacher at Hazel Cameron Elementary School in Vulcan. Greg is 19 and attending the University of Calgary where he studying political science. Brett is in grade 9 and Alex is in Grade 7. We have a small family cabin in the southwest corner of British Columbia near the town of Fernie and I really enjoy heading out to the mountains do some fly-fishing. Besides fly-fishing, I enjoy golfing and making homemade wine.
